Please review this information before requesting a permission code from Writing & Rhetoric Studies
To take WRTG 2010 you can transfer in a prerequisite or take WRTG 1010 here at the U. Certain AP tests will count for as the prerequisite.
Before you take 1010, complete the Informed Self Placement or Writing Pre-Orientation.
WRTG 2010 or equivalent WR2 credit on your Degree Audit.
*We are aware of several issues with classes and prerequisites appearing on the degree audit and still not allowing for registration. If this is the case please email writing@utah.edu through Umail with a brief explanation.
TRANSFERRING FROM A UTAH SCHOOL:
I have completed the prerequisite course at a school in Utah and am registering for my first semester at the U of U.
- Check to make sure your records are fully transferred.
- If you have not transferred your records, do so immediately.
- For immediate help registering, you may have to supply a copy of your unofficial transcript to the Department of Writing and Rhetoric Studies writing@utah.edu or make a quick appointment with our Academic Advisor.
I have completed the prerequisite course at a school in Utah and I have taken courses at the U of U.
- If your course is listed on your degree audit. You may have a time conflict or you did not pass the prerequisite course with an appropriate grade. Verify that there are no time conflicts with the classes you are trying to register for and that you have an appropriate grade in the prerequisite course.
- Verify that the course is not "department consent only"*
- If the courses are not on your degree audit. Submit your transcript to the Admissions Office (electronic transcripts are processed more quickly) and contact our Academic Advisor at l.shaw@utah.edu.
I am currently enrolled in the prerequisite course at another school.
- Provide a copy of your unofficial transcript showing you are currently enrolled in the prerequisite course. Email the transcript to writing@utah.edu.
TRANSFERRING FROM A SCHOOL OUTSIDE OF UTAH:
I have completed the prerequisite course at a school outside of Utah.
- Verify that the prerequisite course shows on your degree audit or that your transcript showing the prerequisite course has been sent to the Admissions Office. If you are still receiving an error, then you may contact writing@utah.edu or make a quick appointment with our Academic Advisor.
I am currently enrolled in the prerequisite course at another school.
- Provide a copy of your unofficial transcript showing you are currently enrolled in the prerequisite course. Email the transcript to writing@utah.edu.
I am currently enrolled in the prerequisite course.
- Steps you can take: you may have a time conflict, you are trying to register for a restricted section of a course, or the course is full. Verify that there are no time conflicts in your schedule, check the schedule for notes about restricted sections, and check that there are seats available in the class you are trying to add.
- Exception: If you are enrolled in a 1st half course that is the prerequisite for a 2nd half course, you will need to contact our Academic Advisor at l.shaw@utah.edu or make a quick appointment with her.
I want to repeat a course for a better grade.
- If you did not take the prerequisite course at the U of U and you passed the course you want to repeat with a C or better.
I met the prerequisite another way.

The course I want to take is designated as section "-290"
- -290 is the designation that UOnline uses. If you see this class, go into Schedule Builder and "uncheck" UOnline Campus. We cannot give you a permission code for any section -290 classes.
The course I want to take is full.
- If the course is a 3000+ please get on the waitlist.
- If the course is WRTG 1010 or WRTG 2010, do not ask for a permission code. We do not sign students in over the cap for any reason.
The course requires WRTG 2010, but is not a WRTG class.
- We cannot provide permission codes for other departments. Contact them.
It is the 2nd week of school and registering requires a permission code.
- Please get the permission code from the instructor. We can give a code if you have written permission from the instructor.
It is past the last day to add classes. Can I still enroll in the course?
- This will require instructor permission and a "late add" form from the Registration Desk in the Student Services Building. Please follow the directions as outlined in the Office of the Registrar's Petition to Request to Add Classes After the Deadline procedure.
I am a non-matriculated student and I took the prerequisites at a different school.
- Contact writing@utah.edu using your Umail address. In your email, include the following: a request for a permission code, the course and section numbers, your UNID, and a copy of your unofficial transcript.
The course I want to take is designated as section "-290"

Please get a permission code directly from your instructor during the second week of the semester. They will only enroll up to their listed enrollment cap.
