Do I really need a permission code?

Please review this information before requesting a permission code from Writing & Rhetoric Studies

TRANSFERRING FROM A UTAH SCHOOL:

I have completed the prerequisite course at a school in Utah and am registering for my first semester at the U of U.

  • Check to make sure your records are fully transfered.
  • If you have not transfered your records, do so immediately.
  • Then, Yes - Request a permission code.
  • You may have to supply a copy of your unofficial transcript to the department to recieve a permission code.

I have completed the prerequisite course at a school in Utah and I have taken courses at the U of U.

  • No  If your course is listed on your degree audit. You may have a time conflict or you did not pass the prerequisite course with an appropriate grade. Verify that there are no time conflicts with the classes you are trying to register for and that you have an appropriate grade in the prerequisite course. *
  • Yes - If the courses are not on your degree audit. Submit your transcript to the Admissions Office (electronic transcripts are processed more quickly) and request a permission code.

*We are aware of several issues with classes and prerequisites appearing on the degree audit (DARS) and still not allowing for registration. If this is the case, then yes submit a request.

I am currently enrolled in the prerequisite course at another school.

  • Yes  Request a permission code and provide a copy of your unofficial transcript showing you are currently enrolled in the prerequisite course. Email the transcript to l.shaw@utah.edu or kelli.borrowman@utah.edu.

TRANSFERRING FROM A SCHOOL OUTSIDE OF UTAH:

I have completed the prerequisite course at a school outside of Utah.  

  • No Verify that the prerequisite courses show on your degree audit or that your transcript showing the prerequisite course has been sent to the Admissions Office. If you are still receiving an error, then you may request a code.

I am currently enrolled in the prerequisite course at another school.

  • Yes  Request a permission code and provide a copy of your unofficial transcript showing you are currently enrolled in the prerequisite course. Email the transcript to l.shaw@utah.edu or kelli.borrowman@utah.edu.

 I am currently enrolled in the prerequisite course.

  • No  Steps you can take: you may have a time conflict, you are trying to register for a restricted section of a course, or the course is full. Verify that there are no time conflicts in your schedule, check the schedule for notes about restricted sections, and check that there are seats available in the class you are trying to add.
  • Exception: If you are enrolled in a 1st half course that is the prerequisite for a 2nd half course you will need to request a permission code.

I want to repeat a course for a better grade.

  • Yes  If you did not take the prerequisite course at the U of U and you passed the course you want to repeat with a C or better.

I met the prerequisite another way.

  • Yes  Request a permission code.

The course I want to take is designated as section "-290"

  • -290 is the designation that Uonline was using for the seats they set aside for the all online program. They are probably showing up in Schedule Builder but we do not currently have access to them. We cannot give you a permission code for any classes with a -290 section.

Fall 2020 Restricted 1010 sections

  • WRTG 1010-018 — RESTRICTED to 1st generation, low income or students with a disability. Contact TRIO/SSS at (801) 581-7188 for registration information. DO NOT CONTACT THE WRITING DEPARTMENT FOR A PERMISSION NUMBER FOR THIS SECTION.
  • WRTG 1010-019 — Class Restricted to Diversity Scholars. 
  • WRTG 1010-040, 041, & 042 — These sections are Restricted to High School Students in the Bridge program.

Fall 2020 Restricted 2010 sections

  • WRTG 2010-036 — This course is designated for “the Diversity Scholars Block U.”

I just took my AP exam and am waiting for the results.

  • No  You need to wait until the College Board sends your scores to the U of U and they appear on your degree audit.

I took my AP exam and scored a 4-5.

  • No  You have completed the WR2 requirement, and should not need a permission code for 3000+ classes. If you still recieve an error, request a code and explain your situation.

I took my AP exam and scored a 3.

  • No  You have completed the WR1 requirement, and should not need a permission code for WRTG 2010. If you still recieve an error, request a code and explain your situation.

I have taken the IB exam within the past two years.

  • Yes  Request a permission code. Make sure your transcript showing your exam results has been sent to the Admissions Office or the information is listed on your degree audit.

My "Index / Score" is a 1 and I want to register for WRTG 2010

My "Index / Score" is a 2 but it won't let me register for WRTG 2010

  • Technically no. But fill out the form anyway and we will likely fix a common error.

I have taken the Writing Placement Essay and my score is not listed on my degree audit.

  • No  Check when the last rating date for the Writing Placement Essay was. You will have to wait for the results. Essays are not rated early.

I have taken the Writing Placement Essay and never received a score.

  • No. Check the last rating date and confirm you submitted your essay BEFORE that day.
  • No. Check your UMail. Results are emailed there.
  • No. If you feel your essay was missed in the last rating, call us. 801-581-7090

The course I want to take is full.

  • If the course is a 3000+ you may request a permission code. Receiving a code for a course that is full is not guaranteed.
  • If the course is WRTG 1010 or WRTG 2010, no. We do not sign students in over the cap for any reason. Please waitlist instead. 

The course requires WRTG 2010, but is not a WRTG class.

  • No. We cannot provide permission codes for other departments. Contact them.

It is the 2nd week of school and registering requires a permission code.

  • Yes. But you must get WRITTEN instructor permission to do so. Email them.

It is past the last day to add classes. Can I still enroll in the course?

  • You will first need to talk with the instructor of the course you want to add. If they are willing to allow you to add the class late they will submit the request on your behalf.

I am a non-matriculated student and I took the prerequisites at a different school.

  • Yes  Request a permission code and include a copy of your unofficial transcript. Email the transcript to l.shaw@utah.edu or kelli.borrowman@utah.edu.
  • No  If you took the prerequisite course here at the U of U.
